A bit more about Orthodontics – What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a field of dentistry that deals with straightening teeth and eliminating any interference in achieving a proper bite
How are teeth Straightened?
Teeth are straightened by using braces, which are glued onto individual teeth with wires being connected to help the teeth move to the required position.
What are the different kinds of braces?
There are a variety of types of braces on the market, however at Dental Pro, we use one of the best braces currently available, and although it is more expensive than the traditional braces we believe that our patients are well worth it. The Braces we use are called the Damon Braces and they come in:
- Damon Metal Braces
- Damon Clear Braces (for those who don not want that metallic look).
There are many advantages to the Damon braces when compared to traditional braces. Here are only a few:
- Faster results and a shorter treatment time with Damon braces.
- Shorter amount of time spent at each appointment.
- Easier to maintain good oral hygiene.
- Smaller in size and more rounded to minimize trauma to lips and cheeks.

How many years does it take to complete the treatment?
The treatment time usually takes between 18-24 months with a check-up every 6-8 weeks after the braces are placed for a check and activation of the appliance.
Is it painful?
Initially when the braces are placed (not during the placement), the patient might encounter some discomfort which could be described as pressure on the teeth rather than pain. Over the next few days the inside of the cheeks and lips might get a little sore. However, the discomfort associated will only last for 10-14 days.
What happens after the treatment is complete?
On completion of the treatment a wire is placed behind the lower teeth to keep the corrected teeth in position and in the upper we provide you with a clear retainer that you have to wear full time for the first 6 months. After that, it needs to be worn only during the night. This phase of the treatment, after the removal of the braces and the placement of the retainers, is called the retention phase.
At Dental pro, after the removal of the braces and placement of the retainer you will be checked once every three months for a year just to make sure your bite is stable and that you are wearing your retainers regularly. After a year it is your responsibility to continue wearing the retainers (night time only) to prevent the teeth from moving.
What are the advantages of Orthodontic treatment?
Whenever a parent asks me if it is necessary to start orthodontic treatment in a child who obviously needs it, I always answer:
‘What is the one thing you would want to gift your child as they step out into the world?” and that according to the Dental Pro team would be “Self Confidence”. When children have straight teeth they smile more confidently, they portray a positive self- image. There are studies which prove that such children do better in school and go on to become high achievers as adults.’
What is the best age to start Orthodontic treatment?
According to the Australian Orthodontic Society and the American Orthodontic Society the best time to take a child to the Orthodontist is by age 7 years for an initial check. This is because apart from straightening teeth even certain misrelation in the jaws can be detected early and treated. If theses misrelation’s of the jaws are not treated early enough, then, as an adult the only way they can be corrected is through surgery.
Please remember, your dentist is the best person to advise you about the brace type that is suitable for you or your child.
How much does it cost? Can I get any finance help?
